How to write a bio people actually read

Your bio is the first thing people read after your name, and most people read it in under two seconds. It doesn't need to be clever. It needs to answer three questions: who are you, what do you make or offer, and why should someone keep looking?

Start with a plain sentence

Try this starting point: "I'm [name]. I make [specific thing] for [people or purpose]." Then rewrite it in your own voice. For example: "Ceramics for slow mornings. Handmade in Bristol. New mugs every Friday."

That bio works because every word earns its place. Ceramics tells you what. Slow mornings tells you the feeling. Bristol tells you where. Every Friday gives you a reason to come back.

Trade broad words for useful details

"Creative person making things" could describe thousands of pages. "Illustrated maps, tiny cities and prints for curious walls" gives someone a picture. Include a location, a schedule or a booking detail when it helps a visitor decide what to do.

Words to cut on sight:

  • Passionate
  • Creative (show it instead)
  • Lover of all things
  • Just a girl or guy who

Write for the next tap

Your bio sits right above your links. Use it to point at the first one. If your top link is a new album, a bio like "New album out now. Tour dates below." makes that first tap feel obvious.

A good bio doesn't describe you. It tells people what to do next.

Keep it short

On Sitemoon a bio can be up to 120 characters. That's on purpose. Long bios get skimmed, and the important part gets lost. If you need more, add a Text block further down.

Read it out loud

Read your bio aloud once. If it sounds like a pitch you would never say in person, simplify it. Your page can look polished without sounding formal.

Three examples

  • Café: "Small batch coffee and cardamom buns. Open 7 to 3, closed Mondays."
  • Photographer: "Wedding and portrait photos in Lisbon. Booking 2027 now."
  • Musician: "Indie pop from Glasgow. New single every month."

Change it often

Your bio isn't carved in stone. Update it when you launch something, when your hours change or when you just get bored of it. Then glance at your stats the week after. If your tap rate goes up, you've found something that works.
